The Role Of Traditional School Year Schedules - 920 Words

Education, school; words that in America, are as common and as free as the air around us. Even though our education has been hard earned, we don’t fully harness our educational freedoms. Many countries in this world do not have access to education; there are children and teenagers all over the world who cannot go to school to make a better future for themselves and their nation. Yet the education we have here in America is free to anyone who wants it. Why don’t we try to better our education? It is because of this, our country has fallen from its high position in the international rankings and is suffering greatly. Traditional school year schedules were originally designed in compliance with agriculture. In the time schools were developed, life was centered on farming, making the summer break a necessity for students so that they could be home for planting and harvest seasons. Even after the importance of agriculture dwindled, schools stuck to the traditional schedule in part because it was difficult to hold classes during the summer months without air conditioning. The year round school schedule would be beneficial to this country’s education and future success. In the early 1900s, American schools started to incorporate year round schedules, but the idea did not become popular until the past two decades when it became clear that American test scores were failing. From here, villages emerged after wheat and barley had been domesticated in the Elevate around 8,500 BC. Thousands of people lived in one space by growing crops on clearly defined areas of land and fishing the fertile waters of rivers, lakes or the sea. This early settlement exemplified human control of nature through technological innovation, with hoes, ploughs, and sickles used to farm the land and pottery Jars made to store the harvest. The emergence of towns and cities is also the story of complex forms of social organization, with the appearance of formalized political and virtual hierarchies, administrations, writing and military power (Page 24). Subsequently, larger civilizations developed through time. Early cities like Jericho and Octal Yuk emerged. Dating back to about 7,000 BC, Jericho had the worlds earliest city walls, stone staircase, and its sufficient water. At 7,100 BC, Octal Yuk existed tort about 1 years, Witt a 32 acre site, mud brick houses, and a population of about 6,000. There is also much evidence of long-distance trade, cowries shells from the Mediterranean, manganese copper and turquoise from eastern Anatolia and the Sinai. Despite having the necessary ingredients to have a livable city, these early civilizations cease to exist which meaner that they were not sustainable. Why werent they sustainable? Much more excavation work is needed before we can get a clear answer on why those early cities werent sustainable. This transitions us into the impact of modern cities and how it is Jeopardizing the sustainability of our world. The industrial city started to develop in Britain in the 18th century with the introduction of coking coal made it possible to create an unprecedented range and quantity of new metal objects (Chapter 4). In 1781, James Watt started the revolutionary rotary-motion steam engines which led to the powering of factories, trains, ships, and cars. This explosion of industrialization resulted in three things. One, faster population growth than ever before with seven billion people currently and two more billion are expected within the next 25 years. Two, global warming due to more greenhouse gas (most notably carbon dioxide) being produced than ever before. And three, globalization and arbitration that is changing the way we live since most of the world will be expected to live in urban areas in the next 25 years. Furthermore, the world is divided into three different type of countries. The core (rich capitalists), semi-periphery, and periphery countries. Periphery countries grow their raw goods mainly for profit and not to feed their own people which leads to starvation. Then there are the semi-peripheral countries like China, India (both becoming capitalists), South Africa, Russia, and South America which have the factories and cheap labor (invest by core capitalists) necessary to produce raw goods. This translates into the core countries getting the most food while not enough food or the poor periphery and semi-periphery where population growth is faster than ever. This violates the third principle of sustainability: seek fair terms of cooperation conducive to sustainability. Actors whose actions affect each other are obligated to cooperate in negotiating fair terms of cooperation in living in a manner that is collectively sustainable. In other words, there needs to be a cooperation in negotiating a fair terms of sharing the resources so we can maintain sustainability. In addition, this global industrialization equals more energy used, this results in ore carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which will yield more severe global warming that will wreak havoc on the earths climate change and weather patterns. Ice caps with high labeled are melting faster than before while the ocean (93% of global warming) is absorbing more heat than before. According to Surface Temperature Analysis from NASA, global temperature has warmed at the highest rate at 1. 12 degrees Fahrenheit anomaly in 2010 and is expected to get worse. The asses was the hottest decade on record but the asses were even hotter according to the NRC. The Auks Met Office (National Weather Service) predicted that if we allowed the earths temperature to increase to 4 degrees Celsius then the impact will be catastrophic. A 2-foot rise in the global sea level is expected by the year 2100 while Saracens become more acidic as carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere dissolve in the ocean. This acidification will harm the ecosystem (about 60% of ocean life depends on coral ere ) that is sensitive to the pH to the ocean water. The average land temperature will be 5. Degrees above pre-industrial levels, agricultural yields are expected to crease for all major cereal crops in all major regions of production, and half of all Himalayan glaciers will be significantly reduced by 2050, leading to 23% of the Chinese population deprived of the vital dry season glacial melt water source. Furthermore, extreme weather patterns are to be expected such as more hurricane and drought. Global warming may spawn more super-storms As emissions of greenhouse gases continue to trap more and more of the suns energy has to be dissipated, resulting in stronger storms, more intense precipitation and higher winds. This vicious cycle of globalization plus population growth plus global warming ultimately equals unsuitability for our future. Ultimately, the Pentagon predicts that global warming will be biggest concern for this century. It is our obligation to maintain sustainability in our world and apply the first principle of sustainability ethics and that is do not diminish natural capital. There are three things to consider when talking about sustainability of cities. They are economy, environment, and equity of society. The Bedding Zero (Bedded) and Lading Echo- Villages compact urban development are good examples of working towards sustainability. Bedded was created on a Brownfield site, a former sewage works, in the borough of Sutton in South London (Chapter 8). It has many innovative features, including its own combined heat and power system burning wood chips, a pool of electric cars, and photovoltaic panels mounted on the conservatories of every flat. Bedded buildings have very high levels of energy and resource efficiency and greatly reduced running costs. Instead of investing in a central heating system, each flat is insulated by 30 centimeters of rock wool like a giant tea coos. Bedded was constructed form natural, recycled or reclaimed materials. Due to its innovative design, solar energy and heat generated by occupants is sufficient to maintain comfortable temperatures even during winter. The Echo-villages designs features key components like: renewable energy-solar hot water, a central facility of visual and performing arts and culture. A photovoltaic and wind power. Water supply form household rainwater tanks, storm water retention in ponds, sewerage to be treated and reclaimed water used for irrigation on site, and a centralized recycling collection. The most difficult issue is finding a different energy source besides coal since our economy has been relying on it for more than a 150 years. Consequently, our biggest energy user is our cars which emits a lot of carbon dioxide. Some suggestions could be investing in new energy sources such as solar power, geothermal, wind, the use of electric/hybrid automobiles, planting more trees, better sewage and recycling systems, etc. Regardless, societies and their governments should create institutions that are conducive With respect to sustainability. Why should we care about the ecosystem? It is our obligation since we depend on it for food. It is part of our human values because we and other human beings cannot survive without it, and the consequences of it are already apparent in some parts of the world. We must strive for a more sustainable future to save and preserve what is left of the planets ecosystem because our lives depend on it. It is simply our obligation, our values, and the consequences if we do not apply principles of sustainability ethics. That is, to not diminish natural capital and that opportunities to experience the natural world are important to human well-being but not captured by the idea to natural capita must act now or else things will get worse.

Here’s the haul. 1. All at sea: lost because of lack of knowledge of one’s position (confused and disorganized) 2. At loose ends: a reference to idle sailors being assigned to check that rigging is secure (idle) 3. Bail out: remove water from (assist or rescue) 4. Broad in the beam: said of a wide vessel (said of a large-hipped woman) 5. By and large: said in reference to steering slightly off the wind to ease effort and decrease the risk of slowing (in general, without special consideration) 6. Cut and run: sever the anchor line in an emergency (leave abruptly and abandoning others) 7. Fall foul of: collide with or become entangled in (come into conflict with) 8. First-rate: the largest class of warships during the sailing era (best) 9. Flog a dead horse: a reference to a period of work after getting and spending an initial payment (focusing on something already completed or settled) 10. Flotsam and jetsam: items lost or thrown overboard, respectively (odds and ends) 11. Give a wide berth: provide sufficient space when anchoring or docking to avoid other ships (keep at a distance) 12. Take another tack: change the ship’s direction in relation to the wind (try another approach) 25. Take the wind out of one’s sails: a reference to the loss of movement when another vessel comes between the wind and one’s ship (to undermine another, usually by anticipating an action) 26. Taken aback: halted by a sudden shift of wind (surprised by a revelation) 27. Three sheets to the wind: a reference to the sheets (ropes) of a sail becoming loosened, rendering the sail useless (drunk) 28. Trim one’s sails (before the wind): adjust sails as appropriate (act according to circumstances) 29. When one’s ship comes home: a reference to the arrival of a fully laden cargo ship that will bring profit to the owner or investors (achievement of fortune or good luck) 30. Whistle for it/whistle for the wind: from the tradition of superstitiously whistling to summon the wind (hope for the impossible) At least two nautical expressions, â€Å"between the devil and the deep (blue) sea† (meaning, essentially, â€Å"between a rock and a hard place†) and â€Å"to the bitter end† (meaning â€Å"to the last extremity, regardless of difficulty†), have been attributed to seafaring origins, but the idioms, or similar expressions, may have come from earlier landlubber usage. Either they have trouble getting their story off the ground, or they can get it off the ground, but it nosedives partway through the book.Either way, the cause is the same: they didn’t start their book from a good story foundation.In other words, they were missing one or more of thethree critical elements that every novel needs to succeed. Theres really nowhere else for you to go but up.The tricky thing, however, is knowing how to get started. After all, that step is the most important, but also the most difficult.These are among the first things you have to do in order to start writing a book as a beginner:#1 Choose a book idea to write aboutIf youre ready to write a book, chances are you hav e more than a single idea in mind thats just how the minds of creatives like yourself work.But how do you choose which to write and which to save for later?The good news is that any and all of your book ideas can get written, its just a matter of choosing which goes first.These are a few questions I like to ask myself when it comes to deciding which idea to start next:Which do you find yourself thinking about most often?Which has a theme/message that means the most to you?Which do you have the most content developed for?Which will be the fastest to write?Once you have an idea in mind that fulfills these questions, youll know that that is the one to write about.Essentailly, in order to choose a book idea, think about which one youre most passionate and excited about. #2 Start your mindmap and outlineOutlining is necessary no matter what type of book youre reading. Even if you think youre the type to write by the seat of your pants, an outline of some sort will come in handy.Even St ephen King has the end of his stories in mind and a few plot points along the way, and he self-identifies as a pantzer, or someone who writes by the seat of ones pants.Now this does NOT mean you have to go through every single part of your story and create a step-by-step outline of everything that will happen.You can do that, but you don’t have to.Generally speaking, there are two kinds of writers out there:Plotters (like James Patterson)Pantzers (like Stephen King)Plotters are people who like to plot their stories in advance, while pantzers are people who don’t- they â€Å"fly by the seat of their pants,† coming up with their story ideas on the fly.You might think that outlining is only important for plottersbut actually, that’s not the case. EVERY writer needs to come up with at least a basic outline before they start writing.Even Stephen King, the most well-known pantzer out there, has admitted that he writes his stories with an end in mind.Knowing whe re your story is going can help you develop the plot to be more complex, exciting, and allow you to hide foreshadowing within the book.This will help you craft your twists to be even harder to see coming something all bookworms love.We have complete guides for learning how to fill out a mindmap and then complete an outline based on it. Check those out before moving on to the nexts steps because its essential to have those details done first.#3 Consider how long you want your book to beThis is also the stage in which you figure out if youll be writing a standalone (a single book) or a series (2 + novels of the same storyline).But first, how long do you want this book to be? MartinOnce you have an idea as to how long you want your book to be, you can better plan out each chapters length and formulate a writing schedule that will allow you to make real progress.How to Start Writing a Novel with the Story Foundation TrifectaFirst off, what IS the Story Foundation Trifecta?It’s a combination of  three things:An interesting premiseA sympathetic heroA clear compelling â€Å"A-story†As you’re about to learn, these are the most critical and fundamental pieces to any successful story. As long as you have these three things in place, your story is bound to be engaging and entertaining.In the rest of this post, I’ll explain what th ese things are and how you can improve these elements in your story idea. And to help you understand, I’ll be using examples from well-known stories such as The Hunger Games, The Matrix, and my own series GoneGod World.Foundation #1: An Interesting PremiseYour premise is the foundation of your plot. The collection of situations or presuppositions that make up your story world.That sounds complicated, so let’s put it in simpler terms:Your premise consists of 2-3 seemingly unconnected ideas that have been meshed together to make something truly unique.If you analyze really popular stories like The Hunger Games and The Matrix, you’ll realize they have great premises. And that’s a big part of the reason why they were so successful.So how do you come up with an awesome premise of your own?One common method is to use the â€Å"What If† technique. Here’s how that might look using The Hunger Games as an example:The Hunger Games: What if, sometime in the future, there is a society which demands children must fight to the death once a year?Immediately, the premise opens up a hundred other questions that your story may or may not answer. What happened to create this world and contest? Why children? What happens to the victors? Your story may not answer all of these questions, and certainly Suzanne Collins – the author of The Hunger Games – doesn’t answer all of them.See how that works? You take a few different ideas and combine them. See how they might fit together.In this case the premise is using the familiar idea of a gladiator storybut it’s mish-mashing that concept by having the gladiators be children.Then when you throw in a couple extra elements, likeSetting the story in the futureIncluding a love-triangle with the main characterHaving a power struggle behind the scenes only the audience knows aboutyou end up with a really great premise for a story.Here’s another example:The Matrix: What if reality isn’t what we think it is, and in fact we’re all connected to computers as human batteries for the robot world?Here we’re taking the idea â€Å"reality isn’t what you think it is† and mashing it together with â€Å"we’re human batteries connected to computers.†These are cool ideas on their own. But when you put them together, they become something really fascinating. With a premise like this, is it any wonder why The Matrix was so successful?And here’s one more example, from my series of books:GoneGod World: What if all the gods are gone, and when they leave they force all their denizens to go to earth?Here I’ve combined the ideas of â€Å"divine creatures† and â€Å"refugees† to create a unique story premise out oftwo familiar ideas.In this story, every sort of magical creature you can think of- dragons, faeries, etc.- is forced to become a refugee on earth. As you can imagine, this opens up all kinds of possibilities for interesting storylines and conflicts.So that’s foundation #1 of the Story Foundation Trifecta: create an interesting premise. Now it’s your turn:How to Start Writing a Book Action Step:Take a look at your favorite stories and identify their premise. Turn those premises into â€Å"What if† statements.Bonus: Among the premises that you have identified, see if you can alter them slightly to turn them into something completely unique.Challenge: Create 3 to 5 premise statements of your own, statements that ultimately create world, you’d love to write in.You’ll be surprised at how quickly you start cranking out really unique story premises.Foundation #2: A Sympathetic HeroFoundation #1 focuses on your plot. It’s a big-picture statement of what happens in your story.But remember, stories don’t just happen by themselves. They happen to characters- to people. To human beings. (And sometimes, to elves and aliens.)At the heart of every story is a hero who strives to meet an important goal. And the more your audience can understand and identify with that hero, the more likely they are to become engrossed by your story.Now when you’re creating your hero, the  three  most important things to figure out are your hero’s:Key traitsOuter journeyInner journeyâ€Å"Key traits† refer to your character’s distinguishing features. Is your hero:Brave?Intelligent?Beautiful?Charming?Underhanded?Strong as an ox?Your character’s journey refers to the challenges they will be forced to overcome throughout the story. And we break that journey up into inner and outer journeys.A few examples:The Hunger Games: Katniss’s outer journey is to survive the games. Her inner journey is to mature as an individual, to let other people in, and to learn to accept help from others.The Matrix: Neo’s outer journey is to defeat Agent Smith and the robot forces enslaving humanity in side the Matrix. His inner journey is to believe in himself and accept that he’s the only one capable of saving the human race.Make sense? Great. Now go figure out who your hero is, give them a few key traits, and most importantly decide on their inner and outer journey. Then when you’ve completed that, you’re ready to move forFoundation #3: A Clear Compelling â€Å"A-Story†Once you know your story’s premise and have identified your hero, your next step is to use those 2 elements to create your â€Å"A-story.†Loosely defined, your A-story is the main storyline in your novel. It’s the one story we need to see resolved in order for us to put down your book and feel satisfied at the end.Your book can have multiple storylines- maybe you have a romance subplot, for example- but your A-story is the main story. The big problem that gets resolved at the end. The big problem that gets resolved at the end.In most cases, your A-story is going t o be the same as your hero’s outer journey. In The Hunger Games, for example, the A-story is Katniss’ trial to survive the games.But your A-story can also tie into your hero’s inner journey. In The Matrix, the A-story deals in part with Neo’s struggle to believe in himself and become â€Å"the one.†Here are some common A-stories for different genres to think about when you start writing a book:Sci-fi: Repel the alien invasionAction: Get revenge on the bad guysRomance: Finally succumb to the love of your lifeIt’s important to know your A-story. This is the storyline that you need to focus on, to keep coming back to. This is the major conflict of your story, so don’t lose sight of it.Exercise: Identifytwo or three unique A-stories that fit could each premise. Spend a few minutes contemplating how the premise and the A-story work together. (And also relish is how your A-story is better than the original 😊.)Bonus: Could you alter o ne of the premises to fit with your own unique A-story? The industrial revolution brought new technologies and techniques that lead to more production, and a more prosperous European society. With these great changes to society and the way things were produced, changes in the government and how the society was run was imminent. Both The Law by Frederic Bastiat and Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx present new and fresh ideas on how society should be governed, Bastiat going into the concepts of liberalism and Marx the concepts of communism, both of which are oriented to the individual rights of people in these European societies. Both Bastiat and Marx believe that every person has individual rights and that every person should have an equal opportunity to lead a successful life. They believe that people should have the right to lead whatever life they chose to. Class structure and how individuals are placed into these classes is the biggest concept that Marx speaks about in Communist Manifesto. Marx believes that there should not be different social classes of people. During his time, there were two main classes of people; the bourgeois and the proletariat. The bourgeois were the modern Capitalist’s, who owned means of production and would employ wage-workers to operate these machines, generating huge profits for themselves. The proletariats were the wage-workers, who could not afford their own means of production, therefore relied on the bourgeois for work and income. The bourgeois had all the power in society. Marx believed that centralizing the means of production would take away the social power that the bourgeois had over the proletariats. He believed in the abolition of private property ... ...ety. Both authors believe that all people should have an equal chance to pursue the life that they want to lead. They believe that society should not be run by the wealthy. Marx argues against social classes, the sense of nationality and the idea that private property lead to social power and the bourgeois dominance in society. They had all the control. Bastiat believed that all people had a God given right to defend themselves, their property, and their liberties. He believed that law was necessary, but that it should be fair and consistent to all of the individuals in a society, no matter their economic stature. He argued that law was changing, and that it was actually going against what it was designed to uphold in the first place. These two authors presented ideas of government that at the time were unheard of, but are still very present across the globe today.

Atomic Research Centre Essay

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) a constituent Unit under the Department of Atomic Energy is a multidisciplinary organisation, pursuing comprehensive research and development programmes for harnessing nuclear energy and also its utilisation for the benefit of the society. These R & D efforts are concentrated in the fields of nuclear sciences, engineering & technology, basic sciences and allied fields and geared for exploitation of atomic energy for power generation and application of radiation technology in the areas of agriculture, health care and industry. The centre is engaged in the research and development of front line technologies. The interaction with academic institutions and international cooperation in related advanced areas of research is being continuously strengthened. BARC continues to give R&D support to all other units of DAE and provide necessary support to ensure national security. The Centre is organised into various Groups and Divisions/Sections and co-ordination of its activities is achieved through the Group Boards, Trombay Scientific Committee and the Trombay Council. Director is the Head of the Unit. He is also declared as Head of the Department and has been delegated financial, administrative and other powers by the Department of Atomic Energy for carrying on with the activities of the Centre. Other functionaries like Group Directors, Associate Directors and Heads of Divisions/Sections have also been delegated powers required for discharging their duties/functions. While the Group Directors, Associate Directors and Heads of Divisions are competent to take decisions in their delegated areas of responsibility, inter-divisional co-ordination is achieved through the Group Boards and Trombay Scientific Committee. The Trombay Council is the policy making body for the Centre. The deliberations of Group Boards, TSC and TC are not open to the public and minutes of such meetings are also not accessible for public. A list of all officers and employees of the Centre with their designations/grades is annexed. Being a Central Govt. organisation, the Centre follows scales of pay notified by the Central government. The scales of pay attached to different posts are also listed. Apart from the basic pay the officers/employees are eligible for Dearness Pay, Dearness Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance, House Rent Allowance etc. as per the orders of the Government of India. The activities of the Centre are financed by the Central Government through the budgetary allocations. The expenditure is broadly categorised into plan, non-plan as also revenue and capital. The details of different budgetary allocation and progress of expenditure are given separately. In compliance with the requirements under Section 5 of the Right to Information Act, 2005 the Centre has appointed Appellate Authority, Central Public Information Officer and 4 Central Assistant Public Information Officers.
